Unstructured Data Drives Edge Computing

Unstructured data outside enterprise databases will account for most of the data driving the value of edge computing, cloud and hybrid cloud computing, data lakes and use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in 2021, says Ronald Schmelzer, Cognilytica principal analyst.

Cloud systems, smart devices including smartphones and voice assistants, and video streaming represent the sources of much of the unstructured data. In the past, as much as 90 percent of that data was not analyzed, he says.

In principle, edge computing should optimize performance and storage by reducing the amount of data crossing wide area networks. Many therefore expect lower computing and processing costs, especially cloud storage, bandwidth and processing expenses.

Edge computing helps to speed up data analysis and provides faster responses to the user, he says.
